Are You Braai Ready? Essential Braai Safety Tips
September is Heritage Month, and across South Africa that means gathering with family and friends, lighting the fire and celebrating one of our favourite traditions – the braai.
Whether you’re cooking over charcoal, wood or gas, a great braai starts with safety. Before you light the fire this Heritage Month, make sure you’re braai ready with these simple tips from Mica.
1. Pick the right spot
Always braai outdoors in a well-ventilated area. Place your braai on a stable, level surface and keep it a safe distance from dry grass, fences, buildings, combustible materials and overhanging branches.
Be particularly careful when braaiing in or near lapas and thatched structures, where sparks, flames and heat can create a serious fire risk.
Never use a braai or any other outdoor fuel-burning appliance indoors or in an enclosed space. Burning charcoal, wood or gas can produce carbon monoxide, a dangerous gas that can build up without warning.
2. Light your fire safely
Use proper firelighters and follow the instructions on the packaging. Never use petrol, paraffin or other highly flammable liquids to start or revive a braai fire, as these can cause sudden and dangerous flare-ups.
3. Keep safety equipment close
Be prepared before you strike the first match. Keep a suitable fire extinguisher, fire blanket, bucket of sand or appropriate water source nearby in case of an emergency.
4. Never leave your braai unattended
Once the fire is lit, never leave it unattended. Wind can carry sparks, flames can flare unexpectedly and hot coals can remain a hazard long after the flames have died down.
Keep children and pets at a safe distance from the braai and make sure they are supervised around open flames, hot grids and glowing coals.
5. Use the right braai tools
Long-handled tongs, sturdy braai utensils and heat-resistant gloves help keep your hands away from the heat while giving you better control around the fire.
6. Remember food safety
Keep raw and cooked meat separate and avoid using the same utensils or plates for both unless they have been thoroughly cleaned. Keep perishable food properly chilled until you’re ready to cook, and ensure food is cooked safely before serving.
7. Check your gas braai
If you’re using gas, inspect the hose, regulator and connections before lighting. Look for signs of wear or damage and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for safe operation. Never use a gas braai if you suspect a leak.
8. Make sure the fire is completely out
The braai isn’t finished until the fire is safely extinguished. Make sure the fire is completely out before you leave the area. Never leave hot coals unattended, and make sure all coals and ash are completely cold before disposal.
