Mica Hardware is a nationally established and much-loved community hardware brand that has been serving communities with excellent DIY products for over 40 years.

In 2019, Mica Hardware decided to launch an exciting new segment of our hardware stores – called the Paint Centre segment. The first of this niche, paint-focussed stores was Northriding Mica Paint Centre, which set the bar for more exciting Mica stores to open in the same vein. Following hot in the footsteps of this first Mica Paint Centre, was the opening of Walmer Mica Paint Centre in Port Elizabeth in 2020 – the first of its kind in the Eastern Cape!

Experienced paint store owner Riaan Nel, was thrilled to join Mica, after being in the paint industry for over 15 years. Riaan loved the Mica proposal of becoming a niche Paint Centre and joined the brand in March 2020. Unfortunately, as we know, the COVID pandemic gripped the world in this month, forcing businesses like Walmer Mica Paint Centre to shut their doors for just over a month. Nevertheless, Riaan and his team of experts started thriving as soon as their doors could open once again and they have never looked back! Mica was proud to have supported all our stores through the pandemic with support and guidance, so they could quickly get back to serving their communities.

In 2022, Walmer Mica Paint Centre had the opportunity to relocate to brand new premises, next door to their original store. Mica Support Centre saw this as a fantastic opportunity to assist Walmer Mica Paint Centre in adopting the new corporate look and feel, and so the relaunch began. The store saw new signage being installed, improved till points were put in, deeper shelving was neatly laid out, and a new paint department and new tinting and mixing machines were installed. “They’ve really put a good product together for me,” says store owner, Riaan Nel, “the new look is something that we could be very proud of.”

Over and above assisting Walmer Mica Paint Centre with its new look and feel, Mica Support Centre played a big role in supporting stores with buying and negotiating great pricing with suppliers, so that the cost-savings can be passed on to customers. This played a big role in enabling Walmer Mica Paint Centre to compete firmly in the market and helped establish this store as one of the best in Port Elizabeth.

Walmer Mica Paint Centre has seen tremendous growth since both opening its doors and since the revamp. This renovation allowed the store to offer more products, more suppliers and more choice. “The layout of the store was done by Mica Support Centre, and I think they’ve done a great job,” says Riaan, “We were able to put suppliers and new products in place, and the clients find it more interesting compared to the previous store. We definitely now have a more premium look about our store”.

The new shelving means that customers can find almost any paint-related product they need with ease, plus a whole range of other useful DIY items such as power tools, garden equipment, pool and more!
