How a few small changes can revamp any space in your home!

So your home is missing that “je ne sais quoi” and needs some life breathed into it, but you are not exactly sure how to change it up without remodelling the whole house. You want your haven to look more beautiful and feel more comfortable – fortunately, you do not have to start from scratch to breathe new life into your favourite spaces. There is plenty you can do to give your home a facelift.

In the world of home construction, “renovate” means to make new again. This is not only in terms of structural design, it can also be easy changes like: a fresh coat of paint, cabinet makeovers or installing better illumination. The original design is not radically altered, but rather, the standard is improved.

Here are some simple ways to turn your outdated home into a whole new space:

  1. Paint It Pretty – applying a new paint colour to your whole house or only to feature walls, is one of the easiest ways to quickly transform an outdated space. Don’t be afraid to go bold with your colours or choose a trendy colour that’s in right now, like shades of blue.
  2. Get a Roof – Some older house roofs in South Africa need replacement rather than repair. More often than not, it may be more cost effective to replace your roof than repair it. If changing your roof is in your budget, go for an innovative style that may completely refresh your home’s look from the outside.
  3. Create an Entrance – your entrance sets the tone of how your guests feel as they enter your house. How about adding a new coat rack to the area or even replace the front door with a new contemporary one.
  4. Update the Kitchen Floor – many older homes still have those out-of-date linoleum kitchen floors. Why not redo your kitchen surface with some striking patterned tiles or choose a modern yet very affordable finish, like polished concrete, which looks stunning and costs less!
  5. DIY Kickboard Storage – maximize your storage space by utilizing your kitchen to its maximum capacity. You can turn the inoperative kickboards under the counters into practical pull-out drawers for more kitchen storage.
  6. Put up Splashbacks – Add some retro splashback tiles to your kitchen walls, or even some glossy mosaics to instantly add some elegant charm to your kitchen or bathroom.
  7. Colour the Cabinets – Give tired and scratched cabinets a new coat of paint. Add some chalkboard paint and let the kids get creative. Make sure to fix up any loose hinges.
  8. Bring in a Bench – instead of adding fancy chairs to your breakfast nook, bring in an old school bench to revive your kitchen or eating area.
  9. Reupholster Old Furniture – having your furniture or your favourite worn out chair reupholstered, is an inexpensive way to change up a room.   11. Decorate with Rugs – decorate each room with a fabulous rug that is rather eye-catching to look at and to add warmth and colour to any area. Whether a faux Persian or a designer rug, it will immediately update any space.
  12. Turn up the Light – Another super simple way to revive an outdated room, is to add new light fixtures or even redo your lighting if you can. Remember to go for energy-saving options that will save you money on electricity bills.
  13. Swap out the Toilet – rip out the ancient loos that came with the house, and install a new toilet fixture to modernize your bathroom.
  14. Shower in Luxury – replace your scummy and mouldy showerheads that barely trickle water down and add a luxury shower with dual heads to instantly rejuvenate your shower. Also, swap the brass taps for new contemporary ones.
  15. Add a Facebrick Wall – If your renovation budget is quite tight, rather add a facebrick wall as a feature focus to give a room an attractive industrial look, rather than remodelling all the walls in multiple rooms.
  16. Paper the Wall – there are so many beautiful wallpaper designs that come in a number of rich textures and patterns that can spruce up any room. Wallpaper is easy to install and can change a room’s atmosphere from ordinary to extraordinary.
  17. Make a Small Space Look Bigger – it’s one of the oldest tricks in the interior design book, but by adding one or multiple large mirrors, it makes a small house look much bigger. It’s an economical technique that works.
  18. Install a DIY Wall Garden – if you who do not have much space to put pot plants, you can always create a vertical garden either inside the house or outdoors on the patio or balcony. Whether you have a professional to do it or you Do It Yourself – it’s the change your small space needs!

From the walls to the floors and even the appliances, the key to renovating or redecorating your home, is to devise a goal for each area, and to step by step revamp each part of your home, to exactly how you want it to make you feel when entering that space. Make sure you repair anything in your home that needs attention and to make the most out of DIY to save costs. Renovating your home not only makes it a more attractive place, but it will also add value to it and deliver a return on your investment, if you decide to sell in the future.
